Speaker Bio:
In December of 2012, my life changed. Complications from carpal tunnel surgery led to permanent nerve damage in my left hand. Questions swirled around my head. What would happen to my practice, to my career, to my family? I had Disability Insurance but would it be enough? Would the insurance company uphold their end of the bargain and honor my policy? What exactly did my policy say? Was I really covered? Luckily, I was covered. Sadly though, my policy wasn’t as good as I thought. Things were about to get a lot more complicated in my world. The financial future wasn’t as bright as I had expected.
This experience led me to believe that I was not alone. I assumed many of my peers were likely in the same boat as I was. I became licensed and soon began a personal mission. I knew that I couldn’t change what had happened to my situation but I could help others. As a doctor that had my professional and income taken from me, I understood what was at stake. I quickly found out that my suspicions were correct. Most doctors & dental health professionals do not have the policies and/or coverage that they need and deserve. An overwhelming amount of our peers have been ‘sold’ products that weren’t/aren’t in their best interest.
Because I had a ‘decent’ Disability policy, I do not need additional income to support my family. My primary objectives are to work with my peers to help them optimize potential benefits and to understand exactly what it is that they have and/or might need. I take a holistic approach, looking at many facets of the financial picture in order to give the best advice.

Time: 7:00-9:00 pm
Location: UC Blue Ash, Walters Hall, Room 100
Speaker: Barb Stewart, RDH
Topic: Human Trafficking Awareness for the Dental Professional
2 CE Credits
Cost: FREE for members and students.
$35 for non-members.
We accept cash and check as a form of payment.
No pre-registration is required.
Course Description:
With over 40 million people exploited globally, human trafficking is currently the second largest criminal activity in the world. Victims of human trafficking have very few opportunities to interact directly with people outside of those that their traffickers allow. As a result, dental professionals have the unique opportunity to encounter, and potentially identify individuals who are being or have been trafficked. This course will provide more information for dental professionals on the red-flags to look for in order to identify victims of human trafficking and steps to take in order to safely provide potential help. Information will also be provided about what you can do to get more involved in the fight against human trafficking and where to access more resources for yourself and your dental practice.
About the speaker:
Barb graduated from the University of Alberta, Canada, with an associate degree in Dental Hygiene in 1993. She speaks Japanese from her time living in Northern Japan as a volunteer missionary after graduation. She has practiced dental hygiene in Canada and the US and has been heavily involved in community outreach projects with various organizations and her five children. She completed her B.Sc. with a dental hygiene specialty and will graduate in April 2020 with her Master’s in Public Health through the University of Saskatchewan. This summer she interned with End Slavery Cincinnati as part of her master’s practicum. This fall she will be working as an adjunct instructor with UCBA School of Dental Hygiene. In her spare time, she enjoys vacation time in Western Canada with family, kayaking, binge-reading historical fiction, bargain shopping, and quilting.

Description of Topic:
A Pathway for the Healthy Professional
Learn how to reduce the risk of Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI) and Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs). While debilitating symptoms may not be noticeable to dentists just starting out, it’s important for all practitioners to understand how healthy habits impact productivity, longevity, and quality of life for the entire dental team. And for those who end their day overly fatigued, it’s not too late to re-learn optimal techniques around sitting, moving, and vision. By applying healthy treatment room solutions throughout the day, you’ll see why no one should endure chronic pain again. Course learning objectives:
• Identify habits that lead to debilitating fatigue and pain.
• Recognize the impact of poor posture and strain and how it affects the health of the dental team.
• Identify common chair-side behaviors that lead to strain and poor posture.
• Apply environmental and physical solutions that promote healthy posture and movement.

Course Description: What if you could embark on a journey that would change your patient’s life? The pathway to wellness involves an overall comprehensive and multifaceted approach.
Research has clearly demonstrated the connection between the mouth and the body. Dental professionals are faced with tremendous challenges when communicating the oral-systemic link. With so many patients and so little time, conducting comprehensive assessments and customized treatment protocols can be challenging. This course will assist dental professionals to overcome those challenges and familiarize them with tools that will effectively communicate a patient’s oral health status. Additionally, it will provide evidence based treatment strategies for successful clinical outcomes.
Dental professionals are optimally positioned within the healthcare structure to deliver crucial overall wellness information. Exceed your patients’ expectations and become invested in improving their overall health. Embark on the journey to comprehensive patient care and empower your patients to take action.
About the Speaker: Linda received her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene from, University of Maryland Dental School after being a business owner for nine years. Her professional and clinical background includes; corporate pharmaceuticals, general practice, periodontics and staff position in pediatric dentistry at University of Maryland. This TMJ presentation is highly interactive, and parts of the presentation will require you to be wearing gloves because I know how much you love saliva! Chewing gum or rinsing with mouth wash before the presentation is recommended if you don't want your colleagues talking about you afterwards. My goal is to demonstrate a few of the manual techniques and therapeutic exercises that physical therapists use when treating patients who suffer from TMD. By practicing these activities with your colleagues, you will have first hand experience that will enable you to inform your patients of holistic solutions to TMD that do not require drugs, injections, or surgery!
